Does any property based investment gives you dwelling along with money?

Purchasing a duplex can work well as long as you can simply rent out the unit that you aren't living in. This assumes, of course, that you can qualify for the property. You need to be able to pay the mortgage for BOTH units, without a renter, so that you and the mortgage company are assured that the unit's being vacant will not send you into foreclosure.

In my city, duplexes are now being sold as semi-detached homes, aka townhouses. To buy both units, a mortgage is needed for each unit.

Well any form of rental property should accomplish this as long as its a duplex or larger. lol A duplex is a large home or building that houses 2 groups of people under the same roof. Each have their own separate entrances, kitchens, baths, etc.

You could also just rent out some of the bedrooms, or the basement. Or look for a property with a garage apartment or something along those lines.

There are a lot of ways to go about doing this, the most common would be a duplex arrangement like what was mentioned above. You could also do a half-double style house or do split level living within the same house. I guess the answer just depends on how large of a property you are looking to invest in.
