Yes its a good idea to do some financial thinking before starting to look for a new home.

The most important thing, in my opinion, is to see if you can pay your monthly mortgage. Here's how to test it. Before buying, put aside the future mortgage each month. If you can live without touching that money then yes, you can buy a home.
