Default Is This Strange...

I am presently renting a home where our landlord frequently comes in and STAYS in a small studio (it is really a room with a tiny kitchenette, bed and TV) each week anywhere from 1-3 days. I constantly feel as though I am being spied on, and I really do not like the invasion of privacy. He does not even have a separate bath in the studio area, and is frequently on the floor that I rent from him, using the bathroom. Is this normal? I am really getting kind of weirded out by the whole thing...

You need to look at your rental agreement to see if there is a clause about "enjoyment" or something similar that states how you are protected from invasions of your privacy.

If you are renting in California, you probably have more remedies than people in other states. If there is a Renter's Union or help for renters, you need to contact them quickly. The longer you wait, the more likely that delay will be argued as a sign that his presence hasn't bothered you at all.

I do reside in California and agree that taking action as soon as possible is the best way to remedy this situation. I will have to take a closer look at our rental agreement, but I am pretty sure it is the "standard issue" form. Lucky for us this is a month to month lease and we can leave within 30 days of putting our notice in, which may happen sooner than we thought!

Are you saying your landlord uses your bathroom? Peeks in your medicine cabinet? Maybe uses your soap? Towels? Toothbrush? Eeewww! Tell Creepy the next time he does that you'll give notice and get out of there before he starts doing the Goldilocks routine in the rest of your apartment!

Haha.... Yeah, that is pretty much exactly what I am saying, creepy right?! He has another house him, his wife and kid live in, but he still feels the need to come and swing by (unannounced) and "sleepover" for a couple of nights... I will be seeing him this weekend so I think we are going to need to sit down and have a chat with him about what has been going on, I think we may move out.

Good Idea about chatting with him this weekend. That is really bizarre. Check your rental agreement before your chat, get as much info as you can and bring it to his attention. You are right that is really creepy, you are literally living with your landlord.

I'd say that's a little past strange! Did you get the chance to talk with the guy? How did this turn out...inquiring minds want to know!!??!! Did you guys discuss this when you first moved in there?

Definetly odd behavior. I would consider moving out if the situation does not get fixed. He may use the studio but your bathroom is tooo much. I would feel creeped out too! I wonder how it went after the chat....Good luck on that, would not want to be in your shoes. Do you live by yourself? If yes, double the creepiness!

Very strange indeed... Does the studio have a separate entrance? And when you first rented the place, did he mention something about the studio and that he would be coming there and staying overnight?
