Pets are now like members of the family. Saying no to pets is like saying no to families with children. I have seen homes destroyed by kids as well such as crayon graffiti on walls, general damage and being terribly noisy.

That's pretty much how I feel about it. It's documented the value a pet gives to a person. It's just cruel to exclude them.

Its their property and their choice. Live with it or find somewhere else to rent from.

that's the problem -- where? It took my friend about 7 months to find a decent apartment that would allow children and pets. What do you do when you can't afford to buy a house (and that's a large percentage of people) and you can't find a landlord who will take both?

It's just too bad that perspective is shared by most landlords, which is why it is almost impossible to find a place that rents to people with pets, especially dogs. I work with a rescue and it is heartbreaking to see what people go through to try to keep their pets. Without getting too much into it, landlords really need to try to find ways to be more accommodating to people with pets - higher deposits or regulations would be fine, they just need to be more willing to work with people.

How about, if you rent, don't have a dog? Lots of places will take even multiple cats, whose reputation for cleanliness is overblown, btw. Dogs bark and bite. So do children, but it's illegal most places to discriminate against them. Also, if your kid bites the neighbor the neighbor can't sue the landlord for allowing a vicious child to live in the building...

Amen! It just breaks my heart, the little that I know about it and watching what my friend is going through. Pets are family. Would you abandon your family? Yet, that is what landlords are telling people to do. It's easy to say 'well then go someplace else' but often, there is no place else.

I love kids, but there are some cruel ones out there that can do more destruction than any dog!

I have to agree with you there! Ya know...landlords can always ask a higher deposit or a special pet deposit fee to cover any pet stains and etc that a dog makes. You can't ask for a child deposit, that would be considered awful I'm sure!

I have 2 Rotties and 2 cats, I know that renting an apartment where they would allow all of them is almost impossible. This is why I was forced to buy a house in the country. I really can see why so many pets end up at the shelter! The previous rental complex I lived in allowed only cats or dogs under 20 pounds. They wanted an extra 50 dollars a month for each pet! That was outrageous! I really couldn't find a solution other than buying a home in the country! It is very ,very difficut for pet owners today to find landlords that accept pets, especially the large breed dogs. And if they do their prices are skyrocket high in most cases. For sure dogs are not landlords best firends!
