I have friends that have lived in Park Slope for the past 10 years and can say its an area that has seen a lot of beautification over the past decade or so. It is a great place to live - close enough to the city without the city prices. Anywhere is Manhattan is going to be overpriced, but you may be able to find a decent place if you are willing to live with roommates/share a room - Craigslist is a great place to look for apts. Queens is also a fairly nice borough, with little crime, but there are A LOT of locals to deal with in that area, so you will want to visit before moving right in.
