Default Public Transportation

How important is the availability of public transportation when you are looking at an area to move or develop? Do you think this has become more or less important over the years?

I think that with the raising gas prices some people may reconsider public transportation. It depends on the person as well. If there are families with kids under 16 they might consider taking the bus because they do not have a car. Some people today will do everything to save on gas. Some people may have a job downtown and ride a bus because there is not much parking.

Nowadays, it's more important than ever. My problem is that I'm not close enough to a route. Our public transportation system is great for downtown, for example, but it's nowhere close to my home. I applaud those who use it, but it's not possible for me unfortunately.

I would consider public transportation only when it is as fast as having your own vehicle. When I lived in the Atlanta area. I was spending 4 hours a day on buses and trains after working for nine hours. That soured my opinion of public transportation right there. Oh I forgot to add the 30 minutes to took to walk to and from the closest bus stop. Four and 1/2 hours or transit time to work nine hours. Horrible.

I admit that's always been a big drawback to me. It just takes too long to get from one place to another.

Wow, that is downright awful! I had no idea the public transit system was so flawed in some areas. Sounds just dreadful...

We have a transit system that is absolutely wonderful -- as long as work or live downtown or one of a handful of locations. It's really not helpful to the suburbs or many other areas. Of course, a lot of cutbacks are about to happen, too, with our current budget crisis.

It all depends on how convenient the route is for your destination. I personally lived in an area where the bus did not pass that often so I had to wake up at 6:00 to get at my 8:00 job because I had to switch bus as well. So yes, it can be very frustrating when you have to spend all those hours just commuting! I didn't last long at that job!

I think that it is very important because you may get to a point where you might need to utilize public transportation due to transportation problems.
