Default Cliffside dwellings

Southern California just had an earthquake, which got me thinking again about these folks who live in houses that are literally on the sides of cliffs or mountains. Personally, I think they're insane. lol What about you? could you live in a house on stilts, on the side of a mountain?

Ummm...no I wouldn't. It is nuts where they build some housing developments these days...flood plains, faults, hillsides, streams, rivers...etc.... They fill everything in and forget historic flows and such in some areas deeming them safe to live.

I have seen pictures of settlements that look like they are ready to slide off the cliffs and into the sea.

I don't think I could do it, and marvel that they get any homeowner's insurance!

Ah, I have seen some of those! They look rather picturesque when you drive by, but would I want to live in one? Probably not!

If they are not living in what is called a geodesic dome then they are crazy. Google that term if you don't know what I am talking about. They are very earthquake proof :P

Are they mudslide proof, too? lol I couldn't even walk inside one of those things. When LA had all that rain a year or two ago, some of them just slid on down into the ocean. Bye bye house.

I have never really understood the concept of building a house on a cliff myself - especially in areas like so cal that are prone to natural disasters. For some people though the view is more important than the safety, and if the price is a right, a contractor will build a house anywhere.

I just think we're insane for giving them building permits. I wonder what the construction guys get paid for that kind of a job.

Personally not. I must admit though that I have seem some really neat homes in such locations. The view may be nice from the top but not my idea of cozy home.

Well that protects against shaking, but doesn't protect against the structure falling off the cliff!
