What are prices like in Texas for homes? Have they felt the same hit from the foreclosure crisis as places like California and Florida?

I was looking for cheap homes in Texas and found a few but I heard then that they have really high property taxes. You can try Realtor. com and look for prices for homes near Austin , I think there are still a few under 50,000 but are mostly major fixer uppers.

I never knew about the property tax being so high - any idea what percent they are using?

Years ago my mother was really into buying property in Texas because the cost of living is lower. What she didn't calculate is how much less people make there, and had to give up on the idea!

Does anyone know anything about the San Antonio area as far as real estate prices? I visited there once and it seems like a good place to live.
