Property developer says going green is imperative

A Middle Eastern development is incorporating a water recycling system in an effort to improve environmental sustainability.

The builders of The Wave in Muscat, Oman, are also putting energy efficiency at the top of the project’s agenda.

The mixed-use community development, spread along 6kms of natural beach, is the first 100 per cent freehold development in Oman.

Nick Smith, chief executive of the project, said:

“All the initiatives which we have undertaken are not mandatory for the construction but we have considered that ‘going green’ is in fact imperative.”

Design techniques, materials and technologies that minimise the buildings’ environmental impact are all being used by The Wave’s planners.

Besides water recycling, the scheme is also employing more energy efficient air conditioning.

Units at the development have an “enhanced thermal envelope” meaning the walls have cavity insulation with low “E glazing”, which helps reduce heat loss from within the building.

A statement by the developers read:

“Sustainable real estate is not a passing trend but is the new way of doing business in real estate, as sustainable buildings and developments provide considerable financial savings.”

The Wave is a public-private venture valued at $2.5 billion and featuring apartments, townhouses, villas and three luxury hotels.
