American real estate renters are showing some interesting trends when it comes to the domestic pets question, a survey has shown.
Property investment landlords may be surprised to know tenants who prefer cats tend to be grouped in the north of the US, while dog-loving renters are typically based in the south, creating a clear 50 – 50 divide.
The pattern was uncovered by MyNewPlace, an apartment search company, which found on average renters across the nation search for dog-friendly apartments 52 percent more regularly than for cat-friendly apartments.
Dogs were most popular among tenants looking for places in Miami as renters there searched 75 per cent more for properties welcoming to dogs.
The site had a few suggestions for the odd trend, saying:
“Perhaps climate is a driving factor, since cats can be kept indoors during cold winter months, but dogs typically need much more time outdoors.”
Last month the Chicago Daily Herald newspaper looked into the rights of US landlords to declare ‘no pets’ policies.
The paper noted there is no regulation in place to stop a landlord from initially saying yes to domestic animals and then deciding they no longer allow pets to be kept by tenants.
