indendence station US PRAn American development bidding to become the world’s greenest real estate project has started accepting pre-reservations on its new homes.

Independence Station, Oregon, will open in 2010 and has announced the 15 condo style homes are open for “priority pre-reservations”.

The one and two bedroom homes range in size from 600 to 1,660 sq ft with prices starting in the $300,000s all the way up to the $600,000-plus mark.

Environment-saving benefits in the building include radiant floor heating and cooling, solar water heating, day lighting design, and energy storage technology.

The real estate project also includes a backup power system - a former tugboat engine which has been nicknamed ‘Mabel’ and runs on waste vegetable oil from local restaurants.

Executives of the project said people owning homes in the scheme would be green home “pioneers”.

Steven Ribeiro, of Aldeia Development said: “These pioneers, however, will be embarking on a quest to demonstrate to the world how responsible energy consumption can look.

“Our goal is to provide a platform for a very comfortable and elevated lifestyle while consuming just 17 per cent of the energy and a fraction of the water that the average American consumes today.”

Officials also said the building is on track to earn the world’s highest LEED rating - a green assessment marker - when completed in 2010.

Around $15 million has been invested in the real estate project, which will also include a restaurant, internet cafe, and research facility besides the green homes.
