A striking new tower featuring upmarket apartment homes has been given the go-ahead in London – but again the final design is smaller than initial plans. The 550ft ‘One Blackfriars Road’ property scheme has been approved by communities secretary Hazel Blears and will be built at the southern end of Blackfriars Bridge in the UK capital.
Earlier plans included 68 storeys but according to 24dash, this was reduced to 52 in September 2006 as new London property schemes came under increasing pressure to keep size down.
The ‘Penny Whistle’ tower, featuring 560 homes and planned for Ealing in London is currently on hold and facing an inquiry due to concerns about its 86-metre planned height.
One Blackfriars Road will feature 64 “spectacular” apartment homes, plus a hotel, and is already known as ‘The Boomerang’ thanks to its distinctive shape.
It is being built by the Beetham Organisation, a property investment and development company which built 301 Deansgate, a mixed-use 47 storey scheme in Manchester.
Beetham chairman Hugh Frost, quoted by 24dash, said: “This is a much-needed boost to London. The development is a vital part of the regeneration of the south bank of the Thames, creating an iconic landmark and tourist destination, as well as providing jobs and a total transformation for the area.”
More details on the availability of homes in the development is expected as the building work begins to take shape.
