Avante Celebrate World Architecture Day

October 5, 2009 by OPPE News

Avante nearThis Monday (5th October) saw the property sector mark World Architecture Day. The aim of the day is to celebrate the best architecture, but also to remind the world of its collective responsibility for the future of the human habitat. Crest Nicholson is very proud of the modern architecture at its Avante development in Coxheath, Kent, which not only is visually striking but also pushes the boundaries of sustainable living.

Avante is an innovative collection of 150 highly contemporary one and two bedroom apartments and two, three and four bedroom houses. Designed by award winning architects Sheppard Robson, the development has been designed using a modern mix of materials, giving the development a fresh and modern look that also manages to blend in with the local Kentish village surroundings.

The architecture of the scheme is highly contemporary and the homes at Avante have a distinctive look, with unusual varied roof elevations that bear similarity to those of the Huf House. From the outside, the homes at Avante catch the eye with clean, angular shapes and a mixture of white render and timber cladding. Other features include a central lantern roof light which, made of glass, adds an extra unique edge to the properties.

Annette Cole, Sales & Marketing Director at Crest Nicholson (Eastern) Ltd comments: “The design and architecture of a development is important in building a community, and as a recent CABE report showed, 87 percent of people believe that better quality buildings and public spaces improve their quality of life. With the striking architecture as well as sustainable living, homes at Avante offer buyers a truly individual home built to the high standard associated with Crest Nicholson.”

Alan Shingler, Architect at Sheppard Robson who designed the scheme comments: “When we looked at designing Avante we consulted the Kent Design Guide making sure that the properties fitted in with the local vernacular. The timber cladding was one of the main materials that fitted the local surroundings as well as having a low embodied energy, meaning that the energy used in making and transporting the material is low, resulting in low carbon emissions.”

Alan continues; “The design for Avante came from a government competition run by then deputy prime minister John Prescott, called ‘Design 4 Manufacture’ and aimed to reduce the carbon footprint of developers and house builders. This was the first real initiative that the government launched that made the design of new homes more sustainable. The lessons that were learnt from the building and design of Avante are now being widely used in the manufacture of other new homes to ensure they are more energy efficient and working towards a final goal where all homes will be built to zero carbon by 2016.”

Properties at Avante also incorporate a number of innovative eco-features, including low energy lighting throughout that helps reduce electricity consumption. The glazing within all of the homes has been minimised in the bedrooms and maximised in the living areas to let light flood in and reduce the loss of heat. The central lantern roof light is another eco feature which allows a generous amount of daylight into all properties. This unique feature also provides natural ventilation and improves solar gain.

Located in Coxheath in Kent, Avante is just four miles south of Maidstone. Well positioned, the development is situated a few miles from the M20.
