The residents of Bramshott Place Village in Liphook are generally fit and active – which is why they get so much out of life at the over 55s village – and now they will find it easier to stay that way, thanks to the new village nurse, Chris Gorman. Chris is also an inspiration to them, as, sponsored by Bramshott Place Village, she has just cycled from London to Paris in a charity event, known as the “professional cycling event for amateurs”, raising £6000 for WaterAid.
Chris commented on the race: “It is very professional, though designed for amateurs, with all the elements of a professional race – the rolling road closures, motorcycle outriders, team cars, mechanics, masseurs, the whole works. It has been going every year since 2004, and always has lots of celebrities taking part. This year we had Nigel Mansell (still concussed from his accident at Le Mans!), Will Carling, Geoff Thomas, John Salako, Grant Bovey and ex-pro cyclists Stephen Roche, Magnus Backstedt and Scott Sunderland,” she said.
“There are only two events which close the roads of Paris, one is this and the other is the Tour de France! 350 riders take part in five groups and on the last day we all meet up about 40km from Paris and ride in as one huge group with about 27 motorcycle outriders. It was fantastic! The total distance is 550km, ridden over 3 days.”
Chris is a State Registered General Nurse who previously worked in a day hospital for older people, and has spent her whole career up until now in the NHS. Her work at Bramshott Place Village includes daily clinics, Monday to Friday, from 9am to 2pm.
She advises residents on minor aches and pains, carries out blood tests and gives general health advice, referring patients to their GP if necessary. She will runs Well Person Clinics, and gives health education talks on subjects such as keeping active, healthy eating, alcohol and smoking. However, she says: “Really, I’ll be guided by the residents on what they want from me.”
Her first impressions of Bramshott are very favourable. “It’s really lovely, a nice environment to work in. The residents are keen and active, and seem to want to engage with me. Quite often they’ll just pop in to say hello and let me know how they’re getting on.”
Prices range from £300,000 to £495,000 for the apartments and from £440,000 to £535,000 for the cottages. Each property is sold with a 125-year lease and ample outdoor parking.
