The recession sirens are sounding, the economic apocalypse is upon us. But fear not, you can hide from credit crunch chaos by investing in a new home with a difference.

At an auction to be held by estate agent Savills this month, a property with ‘extensive underground accommodation’ is up for grabs in Nottingham. An ideal real estate investment for those who want to shelter from the property wobble in the UK at the moment.

By ‘extensive underground accommodation’, they actually mean that your new home is a 1950s bunker. Cosy. Savills describe the lot in the auction brief as “a rare opportunity to acquire a historical site in Watnall” and the guide price for the site is £45,000 to £50,000.

Plotting property investment domination

The bunker also comes with a 6.37 acre piece of land, a former railway cutting site, which is a prime investment opportunity. Think of it this way, if you invest in the land for an overground property development, the bunker will provide extra space for your smart price beans and bottled water during the meltdown. Or provide an underground lair from which to plot world domination.

‘Low impact’ on environment

Although underground living isn’t exactly popular in the UK at the moment, hobbits have been doing it for years and environmentalists are certainly in favour - the earth provides a natural insulation so underground homes can be very energy efficient and have a very low impact on the environment.

And while living in a bunker doesn’t exactly conjure up images of light and airy spaces, at least you’ll be protected from the shockwave if the UK stock market really does go bust.
