Signage shock for UK investment property tenants

Imagine the shock when you got the milk in the morning. A house tenant, you’ve not paid the rent, perhaps because you’ve fallen behind and have ended up on hard times, or perhaps because you’re just tight and disorganised.

Looking up you see a sign, looking a bit like an agent’s ‘for sale’ notice – instead it reads ‘RENT DODGER LIVES HERE’. Nice.

This is just the tactic being employed by one estate agency firm in Liverpool, which is looking to name and shame people who persistently fail to pay up. Some buy to let investment property owners will love it, others will label it irresponsible, and I’m on the fence on this one. At least until someone hangs a sign around my neck saying “Beware - Fence Sitter”.

“Ill-advised” say NLA

The National Landlords Association is not impressed, calling the idea “ill-advised”.

“We would advise landlords and letting agents against taking the law into their own hands. Instigating some kind of medieval witch hunt against their tenants is a very bad idea”

, they said. Anything which makes someone issue an official statement with the phrase ‘medieval witch hunt’ in it can’t be all bad I guess.

Desperate times, desperate measures

I once spent a good five years living in rented houses – there were some lovely landlords and homes, and some horrendous ones, and I know exactly what I’d have done if I’d found a sign like this outside one day. It’s a ’sun don’t shine’ moment for me – but then again, I always paid the rent on time.
