When you buy a nice new home, or an investment property, you do sometimes find some rather strange things left by the previous occupant.

It is usually just something small, perhaps a pair of dirty knickers down the back of the radiator or if you’re really lucky some old papers detailing the life of some poor old dear.

And we’ve all heard horror stories about new homes built on an old Indian burial ground or where rampant psychotics have gone on a killing spree, a la Amityville Horror.

But Brian Darwin, of Ann Arbor, Michigan, was in for a shock when he started pulling up the paving slabs in front of his house and it turned out they were old grave markers that had been turned upside down and used to make a path.

One reads: “Beloved wife, Mother Viola T. Bagnasco, 1901-1969″.

Builder Bob Knight told the Ann Arbor News: “I’ve never seen anything like it. Ever. In 25 years in business.”

So far they’ve pulled up nine slabs each one supposedly marking the spot where the dearly departed rests in peace.

But there is another 52 of them, and they are pretty sure the rest are also grave markers.

So where do they come from?

Well it seems it’s going to be tricky to find out exactly.

According to a local monument maker, it is common practice to recycle botched gravestones or one where the family have bickered over the wording.

If it wasn’t bad enough that Auntie Mabel’s headstone has been used to line the path of a lovely colonial home, it turns out that her name or date of death might also be wrong.
