Will the i-house revolutionise new homes for sale?

In the future perhaps everything will be so interlinked and interconnected that it all bears the same name. After all, most supermarkets will now sell you bread while also pushing home insurance and a mobile phone.

Now one American company is taking Apple’s brand-building lead to launch a fresh take on new homes for sale - the ‘i-house’. And, according to the inventors, straightforward energy savings are the name of the game, as oppose to gadgetry, although the prototype does have its fair share of technology.

Clayton Homes is launching the i-house on Friday at the Knoxville Convention Centre, Tennessee, as part of its annual exhibition of new projects.

Energy bills ‘below $70 a month’

A manufactured homes company, Clayton says the house will incur typical energy bills of less than $70 a month, falling to to $28 a month if it includes an optional solar system.

A roof over the living area includes a system for collecting rainwater, while decking in the property is made from recycled materials.

A landlords’ dream?

“The new i-house is Energy Star ready, which means the home is at least 30 percent more energy efficient than standard, traditional homes according to the Environmental Protection Agency” says Clayton Homes. When that breaks down to such a reduction in energy bills, who wouldn’t be interested? It’s potentially a buy to let landlords dream – and it could save the world too. Maybe.

If not at least you’ll still have your i-pod to listen to while you’re waiting for the sea to rise above the roof.
