Statue debate hits owners of US investment property flats

As Barack Obama and John McCain battle it out for the US presidency, an altogether holier battle is taking place in the state of Indiana.

Epitomising the ungodly headaches that can befall property investment landlords, a row has broken out between a resident and the owners of the Colonial Crest apartment complex, Muncie, over a four foot tall statue of Jesus Christ.

Newspaper the IndyStar.com reports Daniel Long, 71, put the statue outside the patio door of his apartment, complete with a spotlight, as “his own personal thing” and not to promote or discriminate against other faiths.

But those who run the building are not impressed and, according to the Star, have twice written to Mr Long asking him to remove his statue in accordance with a policy against political and religious signs.

So, where would you stand? Does Mr Long have a right to display his religious icon, even with its shadow-casting spotlight? Or should the Jesus statue go the way of long-haired pets and smokers and be banned outright?

Perhaps it’s not too late to ‘let the nation decide’ and slip and extra option in on voting papers. Mark an ‘x’ for your candidate and one either ‘for’ or ‘against’ Mr Long’s Jesus statue. NBC could do an interactive vote and produce a pie chart.

A healthy debate?

Thankfully, this is what building managers and lettings managers are there for - effectively a kind of referee between warring factions within the building, plus between them and you, the owner. The problem is, sometimes things go a bit beyond Blu Tac on the walls and, well, the media take an interest and a four-foot statue mole hill becomes a mountain.
